Air Sampling

Approximately 12000 workers in the UK die every year from the effects of inhaling hazardous substances during their working lives.

Many workers continue to contract lung diseases from inhaling dusts, fumes and vapours.

Noise Surveys

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 requires each employer to carry out a noise assessment or noise survey where any employee is likely to be exposed to noise at or above the lower exposure action.

A simple rule of thumb to see if you may have a noise problem is to stand about 2m from a person during normal operating conditions and you have to raise your voice to be heard then you may have a noise problem.

Hand Arm & Whole-Body Vibration

Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) is caused by repeated and frequent use of hand-held vibrating tools.

Examples of these are; power drills, chainsaws, pneumatic drills etc.

Too much exposure to hand-arm vibration can cause hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) or carpal tunnel syndrome.

Symptoms include tingling and numbness in the fingers; not being able to feel things with your fingers or loss of strength in your hands.

Ergonomics

This area of occupational health is often overlooked by employers, the result of which can lead to employees suffering musculoskeletal disorders such as back problems, upper limb disorders, lower limb disorders or repetitive strain.

As well as having a debilitating effect on the individual, this can also lead to sickness absence, industrial claims, low moral and low production rates.

Legionella Risk

Legionella is a natural bacteria, which can be found in water systems such as rivers and ponds.

Unfortunately, in the right conditions, the bacteria can also grow in hot and cold water systems, cooling towers, spas and hot tubs.

Workers inhale the bacteria in to their lungs by inhaling aerosols containing the bacteria.

Lighting Surveys

Apart from the obvious effects of poor workplace lighting, such as increased accidents, reduced production rates or more mistakes being made, there are other less obvious consequences.

Where artificial lighting is too dim or too bright, it can have long term effects on employees physical and mental health. Dim lighting can lead to eyestrain, headaches, and increased stress levels.
